United Tradesmen lodge

United Grand Lodge of Ireland; received an application for the creation for a new Lodge within the colonies- Ipswich. Queensland. From the Minutes from the United Grand Lodge of Ireland’s Board of General Purposes; it was recommended by the Provisional Grand Master of New South Wales (with 7pounds enclosed) that a Warrant be issued to “United Tradesmen’s Lodge in Ipswich. This Lodge was formed on the 7th December 1865 and be reissued with Warrant No 288. It arrived in Ipswich on 10th July 1866. This Warrant was issued to a John Robinson, Henry C Williams and Matthew B Taylor. The Foundation members were Bro’s John Robinson P.M -Manufacturer, T. Vokes Dudgeon -Civil Servant , Henry Caleb Beresford Taylor –Contractor, I Bowring Slowman –Printer. Robert Hunter –Clerk, Julies Felix Charet –Jeweler. A.A. Gaskarth –agent, William Hendren –Auctioneer James Pymmmn –Printer Alexander Wilson –Clerk. W.Bro J. Robinson was the Foundation Master. On the 7th December 1865

The following candidates were proposed for Initiation during the initial year. John Ferguson –Builder, George WM Gaynor –Saddler, George Chittendaem –Joiner, John Parkes –Watchmaker, John Albert Doyle –Clerk William Cartier –stationer. The By Laws of the Duke of Leinster Lodge were adopted with the necessary alterations pro-term. At that time,a term of office was six months not twelve as today. At the Installation held on the 3rd June 1866; there were 27 members on the roll.

From the minutes of the Grand Lodge of Ireland. No288 was the issued Number for United Tradesmen’s Irish Constitution Warrant The Warrant No of 288 was 1st issued on the 1st November 1757 to John Osbourne, John Quillian and David Malony along with 6 registered Brethren The Warrant was cancelled on 4th July 1822 with 94 registered brethren. For reasons not explained in the documentation. It was reissued on the 6th February 1883 in Irvinestown Co Fermanagh to William Trotter, William Watt and George Armstrong. By July 1846 a total of 32 brethren on its register. Cancelled on 7th August 1851 and returned to Grand Lodge of Ireland on 25th June 1853. Again reasons not explained. Reissued to United Tradesmen’s Lodge in Ipswich, Queensland by dispensation on 10th July 1866.The Warrant was handed back; so this Lodge could join the Grand Lodge of Queensland. Then it was sent on to South Africa.
